Hi. It has been a while since the last update (over a month in fact). I was hoping to make these updates a semi-weekly thing, but that clearly hasn’t happened so far. I’ll explain why towards the end, but first some progress has been made on Project Color Breaker.
First and foremost, the game is now truly an infinite runner. Procedural generation has been implemented, and becomes more difficult the further the player progresses through obstacles. This will still need some tweaking to get the difficulty curve right, but that will come after some other features are implemented.
Speaking of tweaking things, I am going to have to go back and make some changes to player movement speed and obstacle collision. With the current version of the game, there are too many times I notice the player passing through obstacles they should collide with. I am pretty sure this has to do with the speed the player is traveling at, so there are a couple options I am considering related to object size, speed, and colliders to fix this issue. All of these can be easily adjusted, so hopefully this doesn’t take too long to figure out a solution.
Finally, those of you who follow me on Twitter (yes, I have a professional one now) saw that the color picker was recently added to the game. Players can now pick a primary and secondary color to use in the game. In the released version, the player will start out with two colors off the start, and then be able to purchase more with coins they earn in game. As of right now, the only planned way to earn coins will be to play the game, which are earned based on how far the player goes in the level.
So, where was I the past month. Well, I was primarily occupied with moving and all the things that go with settling into my new place. Aside from that, a lot of my focus recently has been put into job applications, as a new wave of entry level positions started to come out. Some have moved forward, resulting in programming tests and interviews, which took up chunks of time. I had a week long level design test two weeks ago for an FPS game, which I thoroughly enjoyed doing. That in itself basically cemented what I want to end up doing in the industry, even though it may not be where I start.
That’s all I have for this update. Stay tuned on Twitter (@JLSaake) for some smaller updates and development photos. I’ll also post links to new developer updates there as well. As mentioned above, I am looking for entry level game development work, so if you happen to know of a position available feel free to reach out to me via email or on LinkedIn.
